Vertex pistons are manufactured using Low-Ex aluminium alloys with 12%, 18% or 21% silicon depending on application. Pistons are manufactured using gravity cast or hydraulic forging processes, with material structure refined by heat treatment in an automatic HT implant with solubilization by quench in hot water. Machining is completed using CNC machines and software with diamond tools to achieve specific surface finishes. Every Vertex piston undergoes rigorous manual and automatic quality control. Vertex pistons are coated with Molybdenum Bisulphite black coating for break-in and to reduce friction. A new Phosphate Coating is also available, offering increased hardness, light surface porosity, and superior adhesion qualities of the Molybdenum Coating, doubling coating durability. This specific piston is a single ring race piston with a 66.36mm bore.

FULL DESCRIPTION

Vertex 66.36mm Single Ring Race Piston

The Vertex Grade B 66.36mm single ring race piston is engineered for high-performance off-road engine applications. Designed to meet the rigorous demands of racing, this piston utilizes advanced metallurgical processes and precision machining to ensure reliability and optimal power output.

Advanced Manufacturing and Material Quality

Vertex pistons are crafted from specialized Low-Ex (low expansion) aluminium alloys, charged with high concentrations of silicon to provide superior thermal stability. Each piston is manufactured using either gravity casting or hydraulic forging processes, followed by a sophisticated heat treatment cycle. This cycle uses automated equipment to refine the material structure, ensuring maximum strength and durability under extreme operating conditions.

Precision Engineering and Surface Coatings

Every piston is machined using high-tech CNC software and diamond tooling to achieve exact surface finishes tailored to the requirements of the engine. To enhance performance and longevity, these pistons feature a two-stage coating system:

  • Molybdenum Bisulphite Coating: A specialized black coating that assists in the piston break-in process and significantly reduces friction during cylinder operation.
  • Phosphate Coating: Applied using technology derived from Formula One engine development, this coating provides increased hardness and surface porosity. It improves the adhesion of the Molybdenum coating, effectively doubling its durability.
