Vertex pistons are manufactured using Low-Ex aluminium alloys with 12%, 18% or 21% silicon depending on the application. Pistons are made using gravity cast or hydraulic forging processes. The material structure is refined using a hi-tech Heat Treatment process in an automatic HT implant with solubilization by quench in hot water. This heat treating process is cutting edge technology for these aluminium alloys. Machining is completed using the latest CNC machines and software, with diamond tools. Specific surface finishes can be achieved depending on the final application. Every Vertex piston passes through a rigorous manual and automatic quality control process. Vertex pistons are coated with a special Molybdenum Bisulphite black coating to aid break-in and reduce friction within the cylinder. Vertex has introduced a new Phosphate Coating which has a slight hardness increase combined with a light surface porosity that exhibits superior adhesion qualities of the Molybdenum Coating, extending the coating durability. This is a Grade C piston with a 76.97mm bore and 13.2:1 compression.
