Granville Rust Converter is a 5L heavy-duty, water-based co-polymer latex combined with organic chelating agents designed for application to corroded ferrous substrates. It converts rust into a stable organic iron complex, forming an impermeable barrier to oxygen and moisture to prevent further corrosion. This product has a low order of toxicity and does not contain phosphoric acid or lead. It exhibits excellent resistance to acid and alkali splashes, though softening may occur with exposure to aliphatic or aromatic solvents, with recovery upon removal of the solvent. Ideal for automotive shells and chassis, ships ballast tanks, steel bridges, and other industrial applications. Preparation involves removing loose rust and flaking paint, abrading high peaks, and washing with detergent and high-pressure water. A minimum of two coats should be applied by brush, roller, or spray to a wet film thickness of 60-90um per coat. Recommended application temperature is 5-30°C with relative humidity below 80%. Clean equipment with water before the product dries; use lacquer thinner or aromatic solvent for dried coatings. Thinning up to 10% with de-mineralised water is permitted if required. Always wear protective gloves, clothing, eye, and face protection. In case of medical advice, have the product container or label available. Keep out of reach of children. Keep away from ignition sources and do not smoke during use. If on skin or in eyes, rinse cautiously with water.

FULL DESCRIPTION

Granville Heavy Duty Water Based Rust Converter 5L

Granville Rust Converter is a specialized co-polymer latex solution combined with organic chelating agents. It is formulated for direct application onto corroded ferrous metal surfaces. This product actively transforms existing rust into a stable organic iron complex. Upon drying, the polymer forms a durable, impermeable barrier that effectively seals out oxygen and moisture, preventing further corrosion.

Key Features:

  • Actively converts rust into a stable organic iron complex.
  • Forms an impermeable barrier against oxygen and moisture.
  • Extremely low order of toxicity.
  • Does not contain phosphoric acid or lead.
  • Exhibits excellent resistance to acid and alkali splashes.
  • Film may soften upon contact with aliphatic or aromatic solvents but will recover.
  • Water-based formulation.

Directions for Use:

Before application, prepare the substrate by wire brushing to remove loose paint and rust. Abrade to remove high surface peaks, then wash with detergent to eliminate oil and grease. A high-pressure water wash is recommended to remove detergent and corrosion salts. It is crucial not to remove all traces of rust, as its presence is necessary for the chemical reaction to occur.

It is advisable to conduct an initial test area under working conditions to confirm compatibility. Stir the product thoroughly before use and decant the required amount into a non-metallic container. Avoid returning unused material to the original container to prevent contamination.

Apply a minimum of two coats by brush, roller, or spray to achieve a wet film thickness of 60-90um per coat (20-30um dry film thickness).

  • Brush Application: Preferred for the initial coat on heavily rusted substrates to ensure complete penetration.
  • Roller Application: Use a short nap roller for even application. Stripe coat edges by brush if necessary.
  • Spray Application: Can be applied using air-assisted or airless spray techniques.

Atmospheric Conditions: For external application, an air temperature of 5-30°C is ideal. Avoid application if relative humidity exceeds 80% or if there is a risk of rain or condensation during drying. For internal applications, ensure adequate air movement to manage moisture during drying.

Cleaning: Immerse brushes, rollers, or spray tips in clean water during work breaks. Clean equipment with water before the product dries. Dried coating can be removed using lacquer thinner or aromatic solvent.

Thinning: If necessary, use de-mineralised water, but no more than 10%. When applying a primer, use a white spirit-based product and test compatibility on a small area first.

Safety Note: Wear protective gloves, clothing, eye protection, and face protection. In case of skin contact, remove contaminated clothing immediately and rinse with water. If in eyes, rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Keep out of reach of children and away from ignition sources.
